(Tuesday September 20, 2005)
It's been a feverish clearing period this year, according to UCAS, the organisation responsible for managing applications to UK courses in higher education. Latest UCAS figures show that out of 511,669 applicants, 387,662 have had their places successfully confirmed at university or college in comparison with 358,229 at the same point last year - a rise of 29,433. This includes an increase of 8.3% to 282,514 of home students who are under the age of 21.

Of the total figure, 29,674 accepted applicants have found a place through Clearing in comparison with 27,815 at the same point last year. This means that 1,859 more applicants have been successful through Clearing so far, which represents a 6.7% increase. Applicants being accepted on a deferred basis are up by 8.99% from 25,908 to 28,238.
Anyone looking for more info should check out the UCAS website, which now carries student finance information on variable fees, bursaries, scholarships and grants for applicants wanting to find out what support is available to them for 2006 entry.
