NUS fought for Nirav – and won!
(Friday September 23, 2005)

The National Union of Students says that a recent case involving 19-year-old Kenyan student Nirav Shah has highlighted the difficulties students face in even accessing education in the UK. Nirav, who is severely disabled and a wheelchair user, took the British High Commission to the High Court in England for discriminating against him on the basis of disability. He had been given a place to study Economics at Loughborough University but had initially been refused entry to the UK by immigration.

NUS backed Nirav and his family and encouraged students across the country to support Nirav by writing letters of support and signing an online petition at www.supportnirav.co.uk. His student visa application is the first of its kind for a UK university and last week he was given the go ahead to start his chosen degree at Loughborough. NUS Students' with Disabilities Officer Sian Davies led the student campaign for Nirav, she said: 'The case of Nirav Shah proves just how far we have still got to go in the call for equality for disabled people in the twenty first century. Students should be able to base their choices on their ability not accessibility.'
