Camera Obscura
The Thekla Social, Bristol – 19 October 2006
If you enter a very dark room on a bright day and make a tiny hole in the curtain, you'll see an upside-down image of the world outside on your wall. This is a camera obscura, and it's all to do with the laws of physics, apparently. On the 19th October, a dark and packed Thekla was treated to a different kind of Camera Obscura: A group of six talented Glaswegians producing an hour of distinctive and charming harmonies. Their songs were uncomplicated and yet rich and stylish, easily rivalling any of their more famous countryfolk. Tracyanne (vocals and guitar) sipped a mug of tea as if singing sweetly before a roaring log fire in the family home. Kenny (lead guitar) looked like a cuddly bear in his Zak Dingle costume hot off the set of Emmerdale. Carey on the organ (sounds like a British low-budget comedy film) seemed shy but glowing as she burst into life with church and Hammond. Lee and Nigel created supreme woodpeckerish percussion and there was even some trumpet in there as well. Gavin on bass calmly twanged away like a man in control. Camera Obscura are effortlessly enjoyable, creating an atmosphere both cute and loving, fun and emotional. I fully expected the sky to open up with a shower of daisies. A delight. Catch them on a bright, sunny day and you may just see them upside down.
