FIFA 06
Electronic Arts, PC, GC, PS2, Xbox, £29.99-£34.99 - Out Now

Hard to believe it's that time already, but, yup, the pre-Xmas build-up is well under way and that means a whole raft of Electronic Arts titles hitting the stores with the 2006 tag emblazoned across the front. So what if it's still 2005, there are cash cows to be milked and they don't come much bigger than the FIFA franchise. Of course, the big question with any FIFA release is whether or not it's as good as Konami's latest Pro Evolution Soccer instalment and this year, for the very first time, we can answer that in the affirmative. That's not to say FIFA 06 is perfect by any means, and Pro Evo 5 will still be the purists choice purely for the realistic game physics, but EA have bolted on yet more bells and whistles to this year's (or should that be next year's?) version, making it a genuine contender for the first time.

FIFA 06 includes everything from the ability to man mark, make dummies and dink penalties, to the assigning of teams with chemistry ratings and players with individual talents and styles of play. There's also the ubiquitous trendy indie soundtrack and more licensed look-a-like players than you can shake a corner flag at. I'd be happy to find this one in my Xmas stocking. Even if it is October.
