Paul Steel
Louisiana, Bristol – 29 March 2007
Boxes of coloured crayons were handed out to the enthralled audience and all were invited to sketch an imaginary friend. This gig took us back to the days of Floella Benjamin and Humpty as the giant, mop-haired Paul Steel cheerfully made the stage his playschool. Clearly this young man likes the odd Sherbet Dip or three, but his infectious enthusiasm and astonishing hyperactivity left us beaming and fizzing. His songs told us about getting up to mischief while growing up with his own imaginary friend, April, and he cheekily warned any ‘disapproving parents' in the audience about honkin' on a crack pipe. He joked that he would bang his head on the low ceiling at some point during the gig. And, sure enough, as the Beach Boys style harmonies were swallowed up by lively psychedelic capering, we saw why. With limbs and hair all over the place it was a fabulous sound and sight.
