
Fortune Drive, Polytechnic, The Young Knives

An evening of gritty and rasping guitar rock filled the Thekla with energy, aggression and sweat, propelled by a constant surging of testosterone. Fortune Drive, five local brutes, exploded onto the stage with a sparkle and an anger to impose themselves onto the growing audience. Their driving melodies, slashed by frantic walls of feedback, were so reminiscent of the Jesus and Mary Chain that a bigger crowd would have rioted. Their music speaks to a troubled adolescent; with an intense creativity and also an acute pain, that seeped relentlessly into the crowd.
In contrast, Polytechnic's borderline middle-aged performance, complete with neatly topiaried beards, fell flat. Tuneful riffs got heads nodding, but either they're too cool for school or too sophisticated to play in a grubby old boat, because it was hard to shake the feeling they'd just turned up for the cash... read more
