Fahrenheit
Quantic Dream/Atari, PC, PS2, Xbox £34.99 - Out 26 September 2005
The biggest challenge facing games developers today is in not only coming up with something original to catch the attention of an increasingly jaded gaming public, but in putting together a scenario that captures the imagination. Can you remember the last time you played a game where you actually cared about what happened to the characters, where you actually wanted to find out what came next? Exactly. Quantic Dream and Atari, then, should be applauded for being so bold as to make the plotline for their latest adventure, Fahrenheit, more involving and gripping than anything released in recent months.
The plot revolves around Lucas Kane, a banker turned murderer on the run, but the player also takes control of detective Carla Valenti and Tyler Miles, who is in fact tracking down Kane, as well as a host of other characters in this most ingenious of cleverly-plotted thrillers. Fahrenheit is the latest attempt to reinvent the adventure game for the modern times, taking the slow pace and object-based puzzles of yesteryear and updating them with the hot technology of the PlayStation generation. And whilst its anachronistic approach to action and adventure may not always come off, but the gripping story ensures Fahrenheit remains a compelling experience and a modern adventure truly unlike any other.
