MJ Rose - The Halo Effect
MIRA Books, £6.99 (paperback) – Out now
Promising a combination of sex, murder and shock, noted e-publisher and former advertising exec M.J. Rose kicks off her new thriller series with The Halo Effect, the story of Dr Morgan Snow, a sex therapist turned sleuth trying to establish whether the sudden disappearance of one of her clients is linked to a spate of gruesome murders sweeping New York. High-class prostitute Cleo has been seeing Snow for some time, but just after she reveals problems with her new partner and plans to publish a tell-all autobiography, she goes missing. More worryingly a number of young hookers are turning up dead in hotel rooms, brutally defiled and dressed as nuns.
This all sets the scene for an impulsive investigation by Snow, packed with just enough eroticism and suspense to make for a competent page-turner. And whilst some of the book's more hackneyed thriller elements may fail to set the imagination alight – she's never going to fall for the detective, is she ? – Rose's ability to produce a tale with a suitably sharp sting means that Morgan Snow could yet be an amateur sleuth to rival to the likes of Kay Scarpetta or Sara Linton.
