Peter Jackson's King Kong
Ubisoft, all major formats, prices vary – Out 17 November
Video game tie-ins of major movies all too rarely hit the heights of their big screen counterparts, so imagine, then, being in the shoes of Beyond Good and Evil and Rayman creator Michel Ancel and being charged with the (literally) enormous task of recreating Peter Jackson's King Kong for the arthritic-thumbed generation. This is not just any old movie, it's a modern take on a Hollywood classic being helmed by the man responsible for the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy ferchristsakes!
Things look good from the outset and, aided by unparalleled access to Jackson's own Weta development team, their processes and assets, King Kong looks (and sounds) magnificent. Alas, the gameplay itself can't quite live up to such high standards. Primarily a first-person shooter, there are some nice touches – not least when the game switches to a third-person perspective as the player gets to grips with Kong himself – but by and large its all pretty simplistic. You'll hunt dinosaurs, solve a few straightforward puzzles and be done and dusted in less than ten hours of gaming. It's beautifully presented fun while it lasts, but there's simply not enough action here to justify the names on the credits.
