Arctic Monkeys
Plymouth Pavilions– 18 April 2006

Arctic Monkeys, for anyone who's been living under a rock these past months, are now officially a very popular band indeed. In fact, they're Britain 's band of the moment. No longer the feted indie internet success story of popular media folklore, this Sheffieldian quartet are in possession of a string of number ones and a genuine bona fide hit album to boot. I know we're stating the obvious here, but the sheer scale of the Monkeys' meteoric rise only becomes apparent when you're trapped in a sports hall, surrounded by beered up football fans bellowing the words to When the Sun Goes Down and un-ironically high fiving each other to the ‘he's got a driving ban' line. Unfortunately, Alex Turner & Co haven't quite caught up with the scale of their cult yet and seem convinced that they're still playing the Camden Barfly to 80 people, rather than the Plymouth Pavilions to thousands. The sound is awful, the stage presence non-existent and the new songs go down like a lead balloon, but we – the Great British Public – lap it up all the same.
