Robots (certificate PG)
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment - Out 19 September 2005
Robots is a charming and sweet-natured movie drawing cheery inspiration from Toy Story and The Wizard of Oz in equal measure to construct a rock solid, all-ages animated comedy. Amateur inventor Rodney Copperbottom (McGregor) dreams of two things: firstly, to make the world a better place and secondly to meet his idol, the master inventor Bigweld (Mel Brooks). To do this he heads to the imaginatively named Robot City , where he stumbles upon Cappy ( Halle Berry ), a beautiful executive, and a group of misfit ‘bots known as the Rusties, led by arch conman Fender (Robin Williams).
From the makers of Ice Age, Robots has the pedigree, the major studio backing and the cast to make for a storming, laugh-out-loud movie. And that's exactly what it is. Somehow it failed to set the cinema alight first time around, but now, surely, on DVD Rodney and his tinpot pals will get to transport the masses to a wacky, clanky world where robots rule the earth. Moreover, I don't care what any so-called highbrow critics say: Patch Adams or no Patch Adams, Robin Williams makes me laugh so hard I pee my pants.
