The Simpsons – The Complete Sixth Season (certificate 12)
Fox Home Entertainment, £39.99 - Out 17 October 2005
Matt Groening continues to drip-feed the Simpsons' much loved dysfunctional family antics to eager fans, but with this series six box-set only just hitting the shelves as Fox currently broadcasts the 17th season, has familiarity taken the shine off of the Simpsons? Everyone loves show, this is an undisputed fact. The series has long since passed the realm of cult status into being part of everyday life, something that is just always there.
The Simpsons Season Six DVD box set contains 25 episodes of trademark wit, socio-political comment and pure slapstick spread across four discs that will be eagerly lapped up by most, purely for the fact that it is ‘The Simpsons'. Unfortunately, however, the familiarity of the subject matter doesn't always work in this package's favour because, contrary to the popularly held belief, it is actually possible to have too much of a good thing. These episodes are over a decade old though, and three, four, five repeat viewings of a Simpsons episode is de rigeur for most of us. Many of them get better with age, but others featured here are now just too familiar. There's no denying that everyone should see every Simpsons episode at least once in their lifetime - even the not-so-good ones - but whether everyone needs to watch the sixth series until they're quoting Homer in their sleep is a more difficult question. Personally, I can live without it, but for anyone who has yet to hit that wall, this box set will provide hours and hours of hilarity.
