Sonic Gems Collection
Sega, PS2, £19.99 - Out 30 September 2005
Sonic the Hedgehog – God, I'm showing my age now, but I remember when I received a Megadrive one Christmas, bundled with the very first adventure of the Sega's spikey blue wonder. The whole family proceeded to gaze in awe at the speed, sounds and sheer vibrancy of the game, which were one helluva step up from my well-worn Commodore 64. Sonic managed to fulfil all expectations that early video gaming had promised, and sending that two-dimensional rodent scurrying around loop-the-loops gave me many, many hours of pleasure.
But that was then, and this is most definitely now. With gamers more discerning, and just two months ahead of the Xbox 360, is there really any place for Sonic and pals? Gems gathers together a bunch of mid-period Sonic adventures – Sonic CD, Sonic the Fighters and Sonic R, plus a number of seemingly random titles from the long defunct handheld Game Gear – and bundles them together in one handy, sub-?20 disc. But, unfortunately, these aren't even the hedgehog's finest hour, and whilst Sonic CD holds up fairly well, the remainder look tired and dated, and have been done better elsewhere since. Sonic the Hedgehog? Alas, he's showing his age now.
