Maria Headley - The Year Of Yes
HarperElement (hardback), £9.99 – out now

You've probably heard of Maria Headley's Year of Yes by now. A stereotype dispirited single woman, the then-21 year-old Headley was worried that her taste in prospective partners was sabotaging the likelihood of her finding true love. Her ‘type' – bookish and intellectual – was failing to deliver the romance she craved. But rather than simple growing old and spinister-ish, she decided a radical overhaul of her love life was in order and so the wannabe playwright set about devising her own unorthodox dating plan: for a full year, instead of following her instincts, she would date anyone and everyone who asked her, regardless of their age, looks, vocation, whether she liked them or not, or even their gender.

The result, as chronicled in The Year of Yes, is both touching and insightful, frequently funny and sometimes disturbing, but never anything less than gripping. In the ensuing 12 months, Headley dated more than 150 different people, some more than once. Her book is the perfect marriage of trashy chick lit and confessional diary, and it leaves the reader – like the protagonist – amused and emotional. There is, of course, a happy ending and when she was least expecting it, she met her future husband. But then, isn't that always the way? If only.
